FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY BEGINS A CENTURY OF WAR.
In the days of China's Eastern Han Dynasty, the young emperor's power was
suppressed by an evil regent as traitorous eunuchs plunged the court into
chaos. The Han bloodline weakened, and the land was split amongst the strong.
It was a chaotic era when bones filled the fields and fires were seen for
thousands of miles. From the flames emerged the brilliant Cao Cao, the
warm-hearted Liu Bei, the wise Sun Quan, the powerful Lü Bu and the
tyrant Dong Zhuo. From beginnings both low and high, these men rose to power
in the third century to compete for the prize: the throne of China.
From the pages of history begins a century of war. The battle, one sure to
split the sky and break the earth, is now unstoppable...

Guan Yu is remembered as one of the finest heroes of the Three Kingdoms era.
His bravery led him to be memorialized as the Saint of Battle and worshipped
by all generations since.
Although he was a sworn brother to Liu Bei, Guan Yu was tempted by the warlord
Cao Cao. After he dealt the general a terrible defeat, Cao Cao sought to sway
the Guan Yu to his side by offering rank and riches. But his loyalty to his
brother was unyielding. When Guan Yu's loyalties were tested by the general
Zhang Liao, he said, “I know Cao Cao has treated me well, but my oath to
General Liu came first. I will be his brother until death.”
Seeking to return Cao Cao's good favor before leaving to rejoin his sworn
brother, Guan Yu killed Yan Liang to save the warlord at the battle of Baima.
Afterward, he left to search the ranks of Yuan Shao's men.
While he brought Liu Bei countless victories, his pride and self-righteousness
were his downfall. One day, Sun Quan sent a messenger to seek Guan Yu's
daughter's hand in marriage for his son; a proposal Guan Yu rebuffed, saying
“The daughter of a tiger can never wed the son of a dog.” Furious,
Sun Quan sent Lu Meng to ambush the general from the rear during a northern
campaign. He fell victim to the cowardly attack and was executed.
With Guan Yu's death, the Shu Kingdom lost the protection of Jing Province.
Liu Bei's attempt at revenge brought ruin to his kingdom. But despite this
miserable end, Guan Yu's loyal and honorable personality would be idealized
by later generations. His oath, sworn in the Peach Garden, has never been
forgotten by the pages of history.
