THE FATE OF THE HAN DYNASTY IS IN YOUR HANDS!

In the final years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, under the reign of Emperor Ling, ten eunuchs in the imperial palace abused their power. The country was in a dreadful state of affairs; bandits began an uprising, and the people were in turmoil.

The emperor asked the lords of the land to crush the rebellion, but this only resulted in a race for power. After Dong Zhuo usurped the throne only to be quickly defeated, civil war erupted.

Finally, it was Cao Cao who took control of the emperor, commanding the lords in his name. After years of harsh fighting, Cao Cao united the north and prepared to conquer the south in an attempt to unite all of China.

Liu Bei, the fate of the Han Dynasty is in your hands! Will you linger in fear, waiting for death to find you? Or will you take a stand against the evil forces of Cao Cao? Don't hesitate; take your five tiger generals and rush to destroy the enemy!

   MA CHAO
After Cao Cao was defeated at Chibi, he wanted to calm the northwest so that there wouldn't be any worry when he wasn't around. To do so, he would have to get rid of Ma Teng. So Cao Cao issued a fake royal decree to order Ma Teng to wage war against Sun Quan. He set a trap in the middle of Ma Teng's journey to the capital, and assassinated him. Ma Teng's son, Ma Chao, heard of this, despite being far away. Greatly saddened and angered, he ordered his troops to march toward Chang'an, promising to avenge his father's death. Holding onto this grudge, he advanced without being defeated.

After conquering Chang'an pass and Tong Pass, he approached the capital. Cao Cao was forced to prepare his troops and stand against Ma Chao, but to his surprise, none of his generals were a match for Ma Chao. Even the best of them were defeated by Ma Chao. Realizing his victory, Ma Chao rushed into Cao Cao's ranks and tried to capture him. Cao Cao's army was unable to hold him off, so they retreated.

Cao Cao's appearance at the time was that of a man with a long beard wearing a red robe, so Ma Chao ordered his soldiers to slay anyone of that appearance. In order to escape, Cao Cao had to cut his beard and changed his clothes. Though he escaped, it was the worst battle he had faced after his defeat at Chibi.

Even though Ma Chao was a strong general, he did not pay much attention to tactical strategies. Despite winning a small battle against Cao Cao, he was still no match for Cao Cao's tactics, and as a result, eventually lost to him. Admitting defeat, he surrendered to Zhang Lu at Hanzhong. Though at this time, Liu Bei marched his troops into Sichuan. The lord of the land, Liu Zhang, sent a letter to Zhang Lu to request his aid. Zhang Lu ordered Ma Chao to lead the reinforcements. Zhuge Liang borrowed one of Cao Cao's old tactics, spreading false information, and Ma Chao lost Zhang Lu's trust. This, coupled with the fact that his old territory was now in Cao Cao's hands, Ma Chao was forced to join Liu Bei's side.

Although he did not conquer any cities or lands while in Liu Bei's army, Ma Chao still had a very famous reputation around Xiliang. Because of this, Zhuge Liang ordered him to guard the borders around Xiliang to prevent an ambush from the Qiang Tribe. For the remainder of his life, none of the Qiang ever dared to cross the border. Thus, Ma Chao was considered one of Liu Bei's important subordinates.
